From PDF to online publication – Canadian Blood Services takes a step in the right direction.

Our client-partners at Soapbox Design approached us to adapt Canadian Blood Services’ 2010 annual report for online distribution. In previous years, Canadian Blood Services had defaulted to publishing a PDF of the report. This being a year of significant change for the organization, they wanted to explore a cost-effective means of leveraging the report with an online companion piece. Our challenge was to maximize return on investment – to design the best presentation possible with the budget available to us.

We planned for a ten page microsite, available in both English and French – an HTML/Flash hybrid that would highlight the book’s front-end thematic components. Inherently multi-stream and non-linear, Soapbox’s design for the printed report translated well to an online delivery. Where the bulk of the document’s content is accessed through HTML, supportive material is delivered in an interactive manner, contributing to an immersive and participatory presentation.

For the financial report, we segmented the remaining portion of the book into a series of themed PDFs, each available from the microsite’s index page.
